A Case Repert on the Reproduction between Homozygote Nude Rats

Abstract

|
Athymic nude rodents have been used in many kinds of experiments, especially tumor transplantation and anticancer agents screening. Nude rats have T-cell dependent immunological deficiency like nude mice. And it is more useful to take the samples and perform the surgical procedure in the nude rats than nude mice. It is well known that the breeding of the nude rat is performed by mating female heterozygote (rnu/+) and male homozygote(rnu/rnu), because of the lack of lactation in the female homozygote rats as the nude mice.
However, we have found that the NIH female homozygote nude rats (Tac: N: NIH-rnufDF) performing the normal reproduction behaviors, such as lactation for 2 years. The average litter size of homozygote nude rats was 7.8±0.8 heads, higher than that of the heterozygotes (5.1±0.7). And the experiments using the litters of homozygotes did not show the difference of results comparing to those of heterozygotes. As a conclusion, we have succeeded effectively to breed nude rats not using the backcross method and suggest that it is a useful animal model of tumor transplantation.
